What does G17 mean?

If you look up the owl in a hieroglyph reference, you will often find the label G17. That label is useful when you need to find or enter the sign, but it is not what an ancient Egyptian reader would have said aloud.

The letter G places the owl in the bird category of the Gardiner sign list. The number identifies it within that group. These modern codes let you refer to signs even when you cannot draw or type them.

A reading answers a different question

The owl could represent the consonant m. When you see m beside it in a teaching chart, you are looking at a transliteration value. Transliteration uses a modern notation to represent elements of the written Egyptian text. It does not supply all the unwritten vowels or recover a complete recording of ancient speech.

Translation needs the words around it

A translation gives the meaning in another language. To do that, you need more than a catalog of shapes. You need to understand the words, grammar and context. A sign can have more than one function, so its neighbors matter.

In Hiero Pro, you can enter G17 to get ð“…“. That is code conversion. It is useful for typing a sign you have already identified, but it cannot turn an English sentence into Egyptian.
